vegan dogs 101: can dogs really be vegan?Dogs are Omnivores — Dogs have been living alongside humans for over 30,000 years. Thus, it is not surprising that genetic evidence supports their adaptation to a more human-like, starch-rich diet. In comparison to their wolf ancestors, dogs have significantly increased gene expression for pancreatic amylase, maltose to glucose conversion, and intestinal glucose uptake. This means that dogs are very susceptible to plant-based diets.
vegan cats 101: huh? cats can be vegan too?
Nutrients over Ingredients
Cats — and indeed all species — require specific nutrients, rather than specific ingredients. There is no reason why diets comprised entirely of plants, minerals, and synthetically-based ingredients (i.e., vegan diets) cannot meet the necessary palatability, bioavailability, and nutritional requirements of cats.
